SDRW -08D1S-U really slow burning speed - 0.4x

I tried using the default program AND image burn - both have slow burning speeds of 0.4x instead of the max 8x of the burner.

I disabled and re-enabled legacy USB support in BIOS and they did nothing.

I have 4 USB 2.0 ports, 2 of which are being used by the burner.

I am using windows XP pro, 2 gigs of ram.

You try a firmware update for the burner?
Does you computer support USB 2.0?
It might not like the media you are using is it at least 8x?
What is the default program?
Is this using a laptop?
If its a desktop you could have got an internal 22x burner for ~$22 or 1/3 the price of that one.
I have never used one but after reading the newegg reviews it seems like it might be "buggy".

I burn at whatever speed my media supports. Usually 16x since blanks are cheap
It helps if you buy brand name blanks.

8x is pretty fast, only taking 10 minutes average.

16x blanks are ~$12 for 50 if you buy Memorex, Sony ect. Pretty cheap.

I was just looking at newegg. I have a 22x Samsung w/Lightscribe PATA burner I got new in 2007. I paid around $25 for it even back then. Looks like the same speed SATA ones are about $30. I would stay away from the slimline ones if you can. I hear about those going bad more often it seems.
