[SOLVED] Seagate 5TB Backup not detected or takes a long time

Hiya
My Seagate 5TB Backup HDD is either not detected when plugged in or takes a long time to be detected (literally hours).
Does anyone know why this happens, other than the drive is dying? On the occasion I ran a chkdsk test on it when it was detected, no errors were found.

Edit: have tried to do the same on another machine, same result.

SMR is Shingled Magnetic Recording - Technology used to densely pack the sectors on a platter to get the most space from it. It often works well enough but can run into write issues; like an SSD, they cannot erase a single sector, they have to rewrite the block of data which can have severe write performance degradation.

This has me thinking that maybe these '33 slow commands' were large writes where it took too much time to re-write the blocks needed. This makes more sense, IMO, since the rest of the SMART data looked fine.

Backup your data while you can.

It may be that the drive is bogged down in background processes due to bad sectors.

Can you show us a SMART report in CrystalDiskInfo?

The only attribute that appears to have problems is Command Timeouts:

0x002000210028 -> 0x0020 0x0021 0x0028

The raw value consists of 3 components whose values are 32, 33, and 40 (in decimal). It is saying that there were 33 commands which took longer than 5 seconds to complete.

I don't know what to make of this, but I wouldn't be happy about it.
