I am facing a problem with my seagate backup plus slim 1TB ext hard disk.
Im having to get my computer to recognize my external harddrive that just decided to fail while using it. now when I plug the drive into the USB it makes a quiet fast paced beeping sound like its trying to load then after about 30seconds the white light comes on and starts to blink but nothing is recognized. I have tried to get it to work on both Linux and the other Windows 8 with the same results. I have also tried some of Seagates backup tools (and a couple others) but it doesnt even recognize the drive at all. I have also followed Seagates 'solution' they list for when the light is blinking which doesnt work. I have also tried using an usb hub for more power supply but it didnt work. Im really afraid the drive is dead and thousands of hours of movies and tv series have been lost among other important files. Please if anyone can let me know if I should keep trying to figure this out or stop wasting my time if it sounds dead and send it in for a replacement. Thanks for your time & answers.

P.S-Like I Said it does not get recognised...but initially when i plug in the drive..it gets recognised by the computer for the first 30 seconds(in d safely remove hardware) with a low beeping sound..but not shown in 'my computer'...it is listed on device manager nd disk management ...then it is suddenly gone....the hard drive starts blinking continuously...not shown either in device manager or disk management...

Solution
Hey SouravIndia. You did the basic troubleshooting by trying the drive with a different computer and a hub, but I'd recommend that you also try to connect the drive with a different USB cable (not longer than 12"). Another thing which could be at fault here is the external enclosure of the drive. You could take the drive out and connect it directly to the motherboard of the computer with a SATA connection and try to retrieve your data. But note that this would most probably void the drive's warranty and you won't be able to get a replacement.

Hope that helps.

thanx mate for the reply..tried using another cable but it didnt work..problem still persists..not sure wheather to open the enclosure..coz it still has another 6months warranty..nd i had about 925gb of collection...movies and series(everything video files)...well can all the data be recovered?

Unfortunately it does not sound good. In this case, I'd recommend that you contact the manufacturer's customer support first. Taking the drive out of its enclosure is not a 100% guaranteed solution, but it would help if the problem is with the external enclosure, that's why it's up to you to decide if you want to risk voiding your warranty for the chance that this might help you get your data back. The most reliable data recovery solution in your case would be a data recovery company, which unfortunately can prove to be quite costly sometimes. So at the end of the day it's up to you to chose the most suitable option.

No success yet bro. When it happened for the 1st time I replaced the drive. Now It happened with me again yesterday for the 2nd time on the replacement drive. I am just furious withthese seagate drives. Did You find any solution @Brodie Pike

I'd recommend that you go again through all the recommended troubleshooting steps (the ones that you did the first time and the ones suggested by me). Although it would be truly unfortunate for you to have gotten a faulty drive the second time, it's still possible, no matter how coincidental it may be.

this may help - what Boogieman_WD said about trying a different cable - i've got six of the seagate 2TB slim backup plus drives and when i use thin guaged USB cables (including the ones that came with the drives) i have some issues with 3 of my drives. I went to high quality USB 3.0 cables (thicker or heavier guage wire) and haven't had an issue since. I know the cable that came with that drive is supposed to be USB 3.0 but it's a cheap or low quality one. The ones i'm using now are much thicker and stiffer but they're delivering full current to the drives plus i notice transfer times are much faster.

and for the future, i use mine for video storage, but every video file is also backed up to 4 TB HDDs

hope that helps

Hey ,
you need to prioritize if you need data or the money you spent on hard drive ... If you need your money and dont have any important data .. since its still under warranty you can get it replaced easily.
If you need data go to a specialist which fix the issue.
If you have your personal data on it and dont want to give it to a specialist and wouldnt mind if you ruin your device.. you could follow below video and try to open up.. I have done it on my hard drive.... and it worked.... Please note that once you open up the device its no longer under warranty.

I followed the instructions in the YouTube video that was previously posted. Success with my Seagate 1 TB Back Up Plus EXHDD. Turns out the heads were stuck on the platter.
