Hello,

About 6 days ago, my hard drive suddenly failed (I'm not sure whether it is corrupted or the actual hardware is broken) and I had to install windows 7 on my external hard drive. As you would imagine, it is not running optimal at all like this. If it is at all possible I would would like to recover my drive and use it but I will buy another one if I need to.
Mostly I just want to know how can I diagnose it if it doesn't appear in windows. It does show up in my bios but I cannot boot into windows with it connected, it just makes my computer freeze at the windows logo (and also makes my computer freeze when I try to plug it in when windows is running but windows stops freezing after I take it off).
It is about 1 year old (give or take) and there is no noise except for the spinning disks coming from it.

Looking forward to some help.

I think if I just format it completely then I could do this easier but I don't know how to format either in the bios settings or somehow before I boot. Maybe from some boot utility?
