Trying to decide between these 2 HDD. I need to order 2 drives, one for the computer and one for an external enclosure as backup. Looking for reliability and speed, should I get one of each to spread my bets?

I should also add that I am doing a lot of video editing and this would be my data drive, I have 2 other SSD's; 1 for the OS and one for exporting. Any suggestions on other hard drives or enclosures are welcome!

I have the Seagate 1 TB, little brother to the drive that you have listed. It is a very fast HDD and has not given me a moment's trouble. Highly recommended!

All that I know about the WD Reds are that they are designed for RAID arrays and NAS. A Blue or Black may better suit your needs and I believe that the Seagates are cheaper than all of the WDs.

You know what, I didn't realize the Western Digital was only 5400rpm, they don't list the spindle speed on the Newegg page and now I know why, plus I don't need a NAS ready drive.

Someone else suggested HGST and finding it in a retail package instead of bare in order to have a better chance of not getting a DOA and reducing the failure rate.

Why would the retail pkg be any better??

Because with bare drives you never know, they might get shipped like this at some point and you get a bad batch:

If they are packaged for retail you know they have at least that amount of packaging protecting them during shipping:

I couldn't agree more.
Sometimes I wonder how they can ship a package all the way from China, by boat, and it will be fine, but UPS can ship it across town without breaking it. LoL I literally watched a UPS guy toss a box, marked fragile, 30ft into the back of his truck... and nearly got fired for bitching him out. I had just worked 6 hrs on that 18 disk pioneer changer. go figure.

I own 2 3TB Reds for my XBMC computer, and I ran tests on them before installing and copying over 3TBs of movies and shows, and I have to say that I was getting around 150s read and write with these things! From what I understand, they ramp up to 7200 when needed and slow back down to 5400 when idle, or light use for power consumption. The Barracuda XT shows that it should be just a little bit faster, but I myself haven't tested them. My room mate has a stack of them for his XBMC computer, and he loves them! He kept sending me screen shots the night he was copying from his backup server like whoah man check this speed out HAHA! They were hitting some outstanding numbers, but I think he has like 4 of them in a Raid, so I can't say for individual speeds. I would LOVE to know though myself between the two.

Here is some comparative data for you. The Seagate Cuda drives are quite a bit faster:

They do not ship bare drives just thrown in a box like your picture would seem to depict. They are shipped with Styrofoam or closed cell foam separators in between them and the other drives and also above and below them. They are protected every bit as well as the retail packages. The company I work for orders bare drives by the case and they look more like this picture than yours.
