Seagate Cheeath 15k.7 Help

Hello

I have 2 Sata SAS Seagate cheetah 15k.7 300gb, I was wondering if these would work with my ASUS with 6gb sata ports. I have the SAS cables that connect to the drives, but when I hook them up they don't spin up, they are not detected in the BIOS. Am I missing something? someone please help?

SAS ports are not compatible with SATA ports.

You can only use those SAS drives if you have one of the ASUS boards that supports two SAS drives, otherwise as Dereck47 says you need an SAS controller.

SAS drives are usually not backward compatible to SATA, although SATA drives are generally compatible with SAS if you have an adapter.

No idea if those adapters you mention would work, it would be a gamble. Which ASUS board do you have?

As others have pointed out, SAS drives are not compatible with SATA controllers. Despite having identical connectors and electrical configurations, SAS uses the SCSI command set with SATA uses the ATA command set. SAS controllers have compatibility for SATAII drives but no SATA II/III controllers have compatibility for SAS drives

Some time ago, I experimented with scsi and 15k drives.
They worked, but really it was not worth the hassle. I noticed no improved performance.
The value of 15k is shorter random access times, which is good for the os. It has no effect on data transfer rates.
Modern sata drives will be better for the desktop user, and if you really want performance, get a SSD.

You might get $150 for them on e-bay.
