I recently pulled a Seagate 1 TB HDD out of an unused PC to sadly find the HDD has some issues. After Windows gave me several HDD warnings I ran Seagate's tests and the HDD failed prompting me to use their DOS method to solve the problem. I am attempting to boot the DOS thru a USB drive and have had little success. I am able to boot to the USB drive but it comes up with 'FreeDos FAT Kernel Go!' and does not move past that screen. Any help would be awesome!

Thanks,
Jason

I would highly recommend you take it to a professional if your data is important. The drive is clearly degrading and being a Seagate it'll only get worse and eventually become unrecoverable by anyone. Those utilities are all the exact wrong things to try, despite Seagate's recommendation. Remember they are in the business of selling hard drives, not recovering them. If you didn't totally destroy it already it might only cost $300-400 at this point. Keep pushing and it'll quickly be over $1000 or impossible.

If you are insistent on DIY and unwilling to have a pro do it, then you should try ddrescue in Linux to image it (tutorial here). After imaging you may also have to run some data recovery software against the clone drive or image file.
