Okay, so I've had this external hard drive for years and unfortunately no longer have the money to be able to replace it. I've used it with multiple computers and never had an issue. Last year I partitioned part of it (in to FAT32) to be able to watch downloaded movies and T.V shows via my xbox 360. About a month ago, and at first it was only when I plugged my Apple IPhone in to the USB port next to it, it started a Clicking/whirring/beeping sound and a message would pop up saying the partitioned drive needed to be reformatted, when I tried to reformat it I get an error saying windows can not reformat this drive. I thought it was weird, but I dealt with it because it was only when I plugged my IPhone in. I figured maybe it caused a glitch or something. Today, I went to play the sims 4 off my external hard drive. I have it installed on there for certain reasons... mainly this isn't my computer and the person who owns the computer doesn't want me installing stuff on it.. Fair enough. Anyway, I went to play Sims 4 off of my external hard drive, and during my not-so-enjoyable time (I'm not a fan of the game but my WoW subscription ran out) the hard drive started that noise again, and ejected itself from my computer, causing my game to crash, then that window popped up saying the drive needed to be reformatted but windows can not reformat. (My sims 4 is not on the FAT32 partitioned part of the drive.) So I've finally had enough, I figure I can go buy a cheap usb stick and let my daughter watch her movies on that. I removed the partition from the hard drive, and "Merged" them back together. I then tried playing the Sims 4 again, and it happened within 10 minutes of playing. So I figured I would try to remove the sims 4 from my External Hard drive just to see, but as it's moving the files (specifically big ones) It crashes. Can any one tell me if this is unfixable?

Welcome to the community, Zandilar!

Unfortunately the noises you used to hear from the external were definitely not a good sign, usually because they indicate some sort of physical damage on the HDD. I'd strongly recommend you to test the external using your manufacturer's diagnostic tool to check up on the health and SMART status. If the drive is still within the warranty period, you should be able to get a replacement from their customer support. If the file system is FAT32, you won't be able to transfer any files bigger than 4GB.
Either way, contact your manufacturer's support and check your warranty! Hopefully, they will be able to provide you with a solution. :)

Good luck!

Thank you for welcoming me! And darn, I thought this might be the case. Unfortunately, my warranty is long past. So I suppose it's time to get a new one. Thank you again.
