Hello guys !!!

Have to say this first, sorry for my English.

I have an external HDD: Seagate Expansion Desktop External Drive 2TB USB 3.0, you can see more here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWTSHSQ92dg We have 3 happily years with each other, until yesterday.

I format my Seagate into 2 partition/volume: G-1tb, H-1tb. My own computer already have another seagate hdd, 320gb, I format it into 2 partition, C-300GB for Windows and D-20GB for documents (docx, xls ...)

Everything works fine till yesterday, my computer only recognize the G volume, the H volume appear like the A volume (DVD,CD) with no disk inside. And access to data on G volume is very slow. If I try to access the H volume by any means (right click => properties ...), my computer nearly hang (my computer hang, s Firefox, MPC, Word, Excel, ... still function If it already opened)

If I plug that external HDD to other computer, that computer still recognize my HDD (appear message like "found new hardware...", "... installed and ready to use"), but after that, It freeze.

I've tried some method like plug that drive to PC then start with windows, change my usb cable with another ... Nothing works

Here is my specs:
Main ASUS M3 N78 VM
CPU AMD Phenom X4 GP 9850
RAM 2*4GB bus 800 MHz
VGA MSI HD 7790
OS Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Plz help, I will be very appreciated.

Welcome to the TH Community, @dmtiam2591!

This seems pretty unfortunate, I hope you have a backup of the data you have stored on that external drive of yours! 🙁 I'd recommend you to backup as much of it as possible, if you can still access it from somewhere. Once you do that, use the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic utility to check up on the health and SMART status of the external drive. Make sure you run both the long and the short tests.

You've done a great job with the troubleshooting so far! Although, if the external HDD acts the same way on another computer and with a different USB cable, it might be failing. 🙁

Keep me posted with the SMART results, though. Good luck!

Thanks @SuperSoph_WD

Since my external HDD freeze all others PC/laptop except my own PC, I can only run those test you mentioned on that.

Here is the fun part. I installed Crystal Disk and HD Tune on my pc, everything's fine. But I can't start them or any program involved "HDD-Analysis" when my ex HDD is plugging to my computer, even built-in programs from Windows like Disk Management If I remove my ex-HDD, everything work as normal.

Some other details on this bug. I still can access data on the G partition (check my first post), nearly all the data on this partition is video clips. Today, I just saw an entire HD movie on this (Mad Max Fury Road), my MPC need more time to start the film, more time process "rewind" fuction, but If I just saw the movie, everything seem fine, no lag, no stutter, no suddenly stop.

Of course as I mentioned above, I can't access data on H-partition !!!

Hey there again, @dmtiam2591!

I'd still recommend you backup as much of the G partition as possible. If the external drive is influencing the system and the HDD diagnostic utilities in this way, it's definitely not a good sign as it might fail soon. I'd advise you not to play the contents from the external before backing them up somewhere else first. Any additional stress on the drive could be fatal. Try using the DOS version of your HDD manufacturer's diagnostic tool and check the health and SMART status without booting into Windows. First, you will need to create a bootable flash drive with the software and it should be available on the manufacturer's official website, so check it out.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes!

Thanks again @SuperSoph_WD.

I've already backup important stuff in G-partition.

I downloaded SeaTools.

First the Windows version. Seatools recognize my ex-HDD 2TB, It failed Short Drive Self Test test of Seatools, and I do not have time to run those long test yet. Sadly, I can't see the options to check SMART with this method, you can see the screenshot here.
My 320GB internal HDD, the SMART option apeared: http://imgur.com/VddSZv0
My 2TB external HDD, the bug one, SMART not appeared: http://imgur.com/l29KVom

Now the DOS version. Since I don't ave any blank CD/DVD atm, I use my old USB 2GB flash drive. Now Seatools only recognize my internal HDD, although I see the blue LED on my external HDD still blinking, but not normal blinking. Let's say If I copy data from other driver to my ex-HDD, the LED light blinking 1 times/second. But in this case, It's blinking like 5 times/second, and constantly until I plug out the cable.

Another detail of this bug. If I plug my ex-HDD when Windows working, then tried to shutdown/restart the computer, It will not work. The screen keep staying at "Shutting down" message, and It will only really shut down If i plug out my ex-HDD usb cable.

Thanks and sorry for my English, again !!!
