Howdy everyone. I have found tons of great advice here and I'm not getting anywhere on the support site for Seagate. Their new forums are ^%$@^$$^ rediculous!
Here is the situation in point form:

- Was watching a movie that is on the GoFlex drive, via my WDtv device on the home network
- drive started making clicking sounds
- image on tv froze
- turned everything off
- turned everything back on
- seagate drive began making a series of 3 "clicks" and "whirrrrr" sounds.
- WDtv device could no longer interface with seagate drive
- Seagate Dashboard software on laptop said that the "storage unit is not connected to the GoFlex device" ie the base unit the hard drive enclosure sits on to connect via LAN cable and to power the unit.
- My Computer (windows xp) now said that the 2TB hard drive had a Total of 211MB with 54.3MB being used.
- I can access the GoFlex Home via the IP addressed asigned by the router, BUT Seagate Dashboard can no longer see the device.
- Connected directly to my laptop and the LAN doesn't see it either.

I don't have a desktop computer, otherwise I would take the drive and connect it there in SATA. I don't know LINUX at all and even tried to learn some of it using VirtualBox and Xubuntu. No dice...I'm just not good enough. One other person suggested that the device seems to be loading the Flash Ram only and could be fixed via LINUX, but as I said, I just can't.

Does anybody else have any suggestions?? Do ya? PLLLLEEEAAASE!

Thanks in advance.

Solution
You are going to have to open the case and attach the drive to something in hopes of recovering it. You might want to try a relatively inexpensive (relatively!) SATA-to-USB cable. They should come with a power supply and be available for $20 or so.

Clicking sounds from a drive is Not Good.

@ WyomingKnott - Thank you for your quick response amigo! In haste yesterday I went to purchase a SATA to USB cable and the sales agent said they didn't have one (they usually have everything at this store) but that they did have a new enclosure that connected to your network or laptop via USB from the hard drive enclosure. I didn't quite think that was the same or maybe it is. Anyway, it didn't work. So I am going to follow your advice and that of "fd f"(user id) who was at the Seagate forums and pass along his Linux fix to someone who is well versed and see what they can do with it plugged into a tower. Short of that, I'll have to get data recovery from somewhere. This is the only external drive that has just died on me ever. My Toshiba and all my WD's I've had much longer and they are working great. There was no reason for this Seagate to drop dead.

Thanks again! I love this site!
Cheers.
PS I'll update on what the solution finally was...if there is one (lol)

Hi, JunkYardDogP.

I came across your post from last year, but didn't see any update and wondered if you found a solution ..if there is one.
I've got the exact same drive, and the exact same problems recently occurred, and seem unable to find answers.
I've got a ton of data on this drive .... dreading if I can't recover it.

I'd appreciate your reply.
