Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex USB Drive not initialized

My computer device manager can see the Seagate Freeagent GoFlex external USB drive, but when I go to Computer Management, it shows as not initialized and unallocated. When I try to initialize the drive, I get an I/O error.

Did it ever work before? Is there data on it that you need to recover? The answer will tell us which way to go. Also, can you post the entire text of the IO error?
