My Seagate GoFlex external hard drive boots up normal when I plug it into my computer, everything looks fine until I start copying files, the copying process get stuck at certain percentage and when I try opening another folder icon box pop up says I/O device error. I tried plugging it into another laptop and it shows the hard drive present but can't access it. I'm trying to back it up to another hard drive but it wouldn't let me. Anyone know what could be the problem?

Solution
The I/O error you are getting is due to malfunctioning hardware. Back up as much as possible and use this instance as a learning opportunity. Always have a good back up plan.

Basically you want:

3 copies of any data you don't want to lose
2 different mediums it's stored on
1 copy kept offsite, to prevent against disaster.
Hard drive may already have an internal fault so it's too late to back it up now.

You can test it with Seagate SeaTools for Windows to confirm if it's faulty:

Incidentally, I always had bad luck with Seagate external HDDs (very short life), I only buy WD ones now.

Thanks for the tip. The drive passed the short drive self test and long generic test, but failed the short generic test. I didn't perform the advanced test due to fear of losing my data. Under disk management it says the status of drive as healthy. I managed to copy few smaller files to my back up before it failed again, trying check disk on start up and it's been stuck at 74% on stage 2 for hours now. Any suggestions on possible causes?
