Question Seagate Hard Disk Noise

Hi,

I just bought an used 8TB Seagate Exos HD and I although seems to works fine what caught my attention is that on startup it makes very weird sounds, this is the first time I bought a seagate hd and also the first time I bought used storage, with smaller (2TB) WD hd's never heard such weird sounds. It's normal?

I tested the disk with Seatools and it passed the short and long test. Also checked it with CrystalDiskInfo and HD Sentinel and seems to be Ok too but I don't understand to much of the parameters listed in the results. Here are screenshoots of both apps

CrystalDiskInfo

Hardware ECC recovered incresed only once from 1 to 13 then remained in that number
Commad timeout changed from 1 to 100 in "current"

Hd Sentinel Health status

This number "1173" didn't increase since I bought the disk so I assume that errors occurred in the past during a cable problem

HD Sentinel SMART info

Is there something that I should worried about? Thanks in advance for any help.

I can't reach any of the ibb.co URLs.

HD Sentinel is reporting a problematic raw value for the Command Timeout attribute.

0x00070007FFFF -> 0x0007 / 0x0007 / 0xFFFF

This number consists of three components. The first is telling you that there were 7 occasions when the drive required more than 7 seconds to respond to a read/write request. The last number has hit its maximum value, so that would worry me.

Thanks for reply fzabkar, I reauploaded the screencaps, can you see any other bad new?

I just search for "command tryout" and google says " is a critical SMART parameter that indicates a problem with the power supply", this seems to be coherent with the fact that it has 1173 communication problems due to power issues. Could it be that the psu on the system where it was before I bought it was failing causing these problems and now that the hd is being powered by a new psu this is no longer happening? or is this some sort of warning that no matter what psu I use the disk is already damaged?

Command Timeouts are not a PSU problem.

Those Ultra DMA CRC Errors are due to problems related to the SATA interface, either a cable issue or an issue with the SATA port.

The ECC On The Fly Count numbers are always low for current models, so this attribute is not a good indicator of actual problems.

Thank you so much for your help and for clarifying these things for me! The cables seems to be fine (maybe they wasn't in the system of the previous owner of the disk), all my other WD disks work without problems and present no errors at all. perhaps the sata connector on the seagate disk is defective.

Based on what you see, would you advise me to return the disc?

I suspect that the SATA link isn't the best for 6Gbps. If the drive were to drop back to 3Gbps, I expect that UDMA CRC Errors would go away. In any case, these errors are automatically corrected by retransmission of the affected data.

The only thing that would concern me are the Command Timeouts.

SATA cables came with the motherboard, an asus proart x570 (kind of mid/high end mobo), same cables are used with other WD disks and don't report any issue.
Many of the errors that appear in the report came with the disk, meaning that happened where the disk was installed in the previous's owner system, probably a system with defective cables.

This is a screenshot of Crystaldiskinfo from when I plugged it for the first time in my pc, you can see that those values in the command timeout parameter were already there and didn't change it since then.

I had the disk for about 15 days, during this time only the numbers in "ultra ATA CRC error" and "Read error rate" changed, and sincerely aside for the weird noise at the start I didn't experienced data lost, problems to move files, bsods, etc. I can have it another 15 days for testing it before decide if I return it and get the money back or I keep it.
