Have a Seagate 500gb ST35000630NS hard drive. Tried to hook up to laptop with USB to SATA adapter, adapter blew up and must have overpowered the hard drive. Now the hard drive does not spin. There is power and the VCM controller (SMOOTH chip) really heats up, but the platter does not spin. Have similar hard drives and was able to switch out PCB, does the same thing. No spinning and the VCM gets really hot. Took the PCB from non-spinning hard drive and put it on the donor hard drive and it worked and was spinning and able to be recognize by laptop. So, the problem is not with the PCB, it works on the donor hard drive. So what is the problem and how to fix it?

Could be stiction (heads stuck to platters), or a seized or damaged spindle motor. Measure the resistances at the motor's terminals. The phase-to-common resistance should be of the order of 1 ohm, while the phase-to-phase resistance should be twice that.
