Hello guys,

I purchased a Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM, model is ST1000DM010, however, my PC is detecting it as a 5900RPM drive.
Why is this happening and what is the problem?

Thank you in advance :)

Solution
I tried entering the serial number (Z9C34K01) here:

https://www.seagate.com/au/en/support/warranty-and-replacements/

However, it was invalid.

HD Tune is reporting a maximum sustained transfer rate of 180MB/s and a rotation rate of 5900RPM whereas the ST1000DM010 data sheet specifies a transfer rate of 210MB/s and a speed of 7200RPM. The width of the access time graph is about 10msec, which is consistent with the maximum rotational latency at 5900RM.

Your PCB part number is 100724095. According to the following site, this PCB was usually used in ST1000VX000, ST1000VM002 and ST1000DM003.

The 100774000 PCB was usually used in ST1000DM010, ST1000DM003, ST1000VM002 and others...

I just tried to verify the number under the qr code with the seagate website but it was not valid. Is there any other way to prove its a fake so I can have evidence when I try to return it?

The 100774000 PCB was usually used in ST1000DM010, ST1000DM003, ST1000VM002 and others.

https://www.datarecoveryunion.com/?s=100774000

The ST1000VM002 is a 5900RPM Video HDD:
https://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/docs/manual/ce/Pipeline HD Series/100633414m.pdf

Its max sustained data transfer rate is 159MB/s. That's significantly less than HD Tune is reporting, so that would appear to rule out this model???

There are a few other things which you can do to prove that you have a fake. One is to determine the actual manufacture date. The DOM on the label is 26 Nov 2019. You need to remove the PCB (with a Torx 6 screwdriver) and show us the markings on the ICs. These markings will include the manufacture date of the ICs in YWW or YYWW (Year/Week) format.

One other thing you can do is to determine the number of heads.

How to determine number of heads using HD Tune:

Edit:

CrystalDiskInfo is reporting a firmware version of SC12 whereas the label is showing a later (?) version, SC23.

Google seems to associate firmware versions SC12 and SC23 with ST1000VM002:

https://ipv4.google.com/search?q="sc12"+firmware+seagate

Edit #2:

The data transfer rate which is specified for the ST1000VM002 in Seagate's data sheet seems too low. If we were to adjust the transfer rate for the ST1000DM003 to account for a lower RPM, then the transfer rate would be ...

  • 210 MB/s x (5900 / 7200) =172 MB/s
That's more in line with HD Tune.

In fact here is a "review" which does report a tranfer rate of 172MB/s for the ST1000VM002 (firmware SC23) :

https://www.citilink.ru/catalog/computers_and_notebooks/hdd/hdd_in/M00187242/rev24876/

Edit #3:

I wonder if the drive is a SkyHawk ST1000VX005. The datasheet specifies a transfer rate of 180MB/s which is consistent with HD Tune, However the only reference to rotation rate is in the product manual -- "Low-RPM spindle speed".

Product Manual:
https://www.seagate.com/www-content/product-content/skyhawk/en-us/docs/100804836b.pdf

Datasheet:
https://www.seagate.com/www-content/product-content/skyhawk/files/skyhawk-ds-1902-3-1608us.pdf

Edit #4:

It seems that the ST1000VX005 uses the 100774000 PCB. However, the ST1000VX001 uses the 100724095 PCB:

https://www.hddzone.com/st1000vx001-seagate-pcb-100724095-p-3154.html

The ST1000VX001 also has a 180MB/s transfer rate (in datasheet, 159MB/s in manual) and 5900RPM spindle speed.

Solution
I can't really remove the PSB because I would loose my chance in returning it. I purchased it locally from a website that prohibits sellers from selling fake products. I already filed a case and I'm hoping it turns out in my favor. I will provide them with screenshots of the both the serial number and the verification number that shows they are invaild. I'm hoping that is enough to prove its a fake.

Thank you so much for time and help.
Take care :)
