Seagate HDD Warranty: 3 Years Now?

Splendid
Not sure when this changed, but didn't Seagate normally offer 5 year warranties on their internal HDD ... now I see Newegg lists the warranties as 3 years. Anybody know when this changed? I've got maybe 8 drives that had (I thought) 5 year warranties - wonder if they plan to try to claim they now only honor 3 years?

I spoke with a "tech" at Seagate today - seems, indeed, that they changed their standard 5 yr warranty to 3 years "a few months ago" - this is really disappointing. But the good news is Western Digital has some nice drives now with 5 year warranties :) Just check out Newegg.

I remember a few years ago, when a Seagate representative announced that Seagate wanted to raise the bar for hard drive quality and because they had confidence in their product, they were giving a 5 year warranty. Now, not even 5 years later, I believe the realized that their drives are no better than the others and that a 5 year warranty is suicide for a product that is selling for $100.

If your data is important to you, don't worry about the warranty period of the drive. Instead, be sure to have a second drive for backup purposes.
