I have a portable drive that has the port where I plug in the cord loose. The chord still plugs into the drive but my computer doesn't recognize it and it doesn't seem to power on. My Drive has the top piece where the usb port is located comes apart from the rest of the body. how can I get this to work. I did not back up my contents

Contact Seagate as it's a common issue with their externals. They are best placed to fix it & shouldn't cost you anything if it's still under warranty. As for your data, well there's not a lot you can do about that except hope it's still intact when they send the drive back to you (but be aware they may decide to replace the entire unit with a new one rather than repairing yours).

You should have backed it up to another drive as a matter of common sense. Data is not safe on any single drive.

I would steer clear of Seagate externals too in future. I only ever recommend WD.
