Not to down-play Seagate's new product release, but this isnt anything new or unexpected, it was only a matter of time before we saw a portable drive with these specs, which are quite impressive with USB 3.0 and 1.5Tb in a 2.5" drive. Nice work Seagate.

Useful as an off-site backup device for a large RAID array. Just add it as a mirror, let is sync, then kick it out of the array and store it off-site.

I doubt its 9.5mm high. We'll have to wait a bit longer for 1TB and 1.5TB in laptops.

No thanks I will wait till WD gets something out that is a higher quality while being only slightly more expensive but over all I don't trust such drives except for SSD.

What are you talking about? Since when is Seagate a low quality brand?

Seagate isn't bad, but you may want to Google, Seagate 7200.11 firmware issues. They aren't top of the line quality.

Yeah, I'm aware of the 7200.11 issues, but 7200.12 drives are great drives. I'm one of those people that's never had a hard drive failure, and I've owned computers since 1999. I've had seagate, WD and Samsung drives and they've all worked. I don't prescribe to brand loyalty... yet. I'll make a purchase based on performancerice.

Some of us actually can fit 12.5 MM drives in our laptops. It's a nice addition to have now that drives are getting bigger in 2.5 " sizes. Before it was like why?

Im still a little leery of seagate hard drives after their whole firmware debacle they had with their 7200.11 based 1TB/1.5TB/2TB desktop hard drives. I happened to luck out when I got one of the affected 1.5TB drives, as I was able to update the firmware before it took a dive, but it was still rather unsettling to know that before that, their was the possibility that the next time I restarted my PC, my hard drive might just give me the finger and never turn back on.

I love the fact that they are using USB 3 for this. So many companies are slow to adopt new standards, it's nice to see one releasing top of the line products while not holding on to old tech.

I agree.
BTW there is no way that this is a 2-platter drive, it is 3-platter (thus 12.5mm thick). 500GB/platter is quite an achievement! All the other manufactures are still at 375GB/platter (such as the Scorpio Blue 750GB drive).

Unfortunately, I read that the drive is actually thicker than 12.5 (and speculation of 4 platters, rather than 3) see here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1018365

I was hoping I could install this one internally on my laptop and swap my old 750gb drive.
