My Search Companion now calls itself Search Results and does not offer to
find Pictures, music, or video, Documents, etc. Also the animated assistant
is not available nor is the change preferences option. I had a nasty virus
attack and had to repair XP Pro. All else is repaired as far as I can tell,
but this version of Search is not nearly as handy. Any ideas? Thx, BB.

Does re-installing the search companion help?

I tried that right before posting the question. It asked for my XP Pro
upgrade disk and I navigated it to the i386 directory where it loaded the
file. However, nothing changed. The window does not appear in Web Page format
either.

Search Results is Classic Search, it is what I use.

Try this.

Go here...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Read the instructions at the top
Scroll down to...
49. Old Style Search Engine On or Off
Click on Off

This turns on the Search Assistant. Nice doggie. ;-)
