Seating Compound

Does anyone here know where I can purchase seating compount to re-seat the
barrel of a .308 ?

After speaking to a couple of people, they say they use silicon from B&Q
etc., I don't see how this can work the same in the long run, as it is much
softer, and less resistant to shock.

Any help appreciated. Not been here for ages, it's all quiet now. :-(

There are purposely designed bedding kits available (try the sportsman)
but I use epoxy resin mixed with alloy filings.
There are many products available in car shops, some of the “quick fix”
putties look just the job.

There is another problem with using RTV type
silicon. I experimented with a layer of this between
stock and action a good few years back when trying to
create an 'almost silent' air rifle. The acid
(acetic?) in the silicon eats gun bluing within a few
hours.

Last time I recall seeing your sig was about
three computers ago - quite a while... You were being
wildly enthusiastic about your .17 ;-)

Wow... 3 years ago. That could be about right! Quite a few things through
the freezer since then. ;-)

Still using the .17HMR, still a big fan of it. Got a bigger toy now as
well, just need to seat the barrel and action correctly. Some B*stard had
been at the stock with a drimmel. >:-(

I wonder if Milliput would do the job it sets hard and is water resistant .
Its a simple two pack epoxy putty not bad for sealing water leaks either

Are you using it on rabbits/hares? What kind of meat damage are you
getting and how does your game dealer regard this?

I'm due to renew my wabbit gun and I remember early comment about how
much the .17HMR is a meat muncher.

To be fair, most of my shooting is for personal consumption (by family and
friends) or for Pest Control.

The .17 HMR is the best Varminter' I've seen/used, but if you want to be
eating your rabbit, better make sure you head shoot it. ;-) Using the
Hornaday Polymer tipped rounds, you do get quite a bit of meat damage.
There are some HP rounds available now (by CCI), but I've not tried those.

Much more friendly than the .22, although a little more expensive to "run".

Ah. That's what I wanted to know - whether to stick with the .22 &
..22/250 choice or ditch the .22 - a new .22 rf it is. Dear
Santa....................

By "more friendly than the .22" I mean safer. Less ricochets. In fact so
few it's almost non-existent. As with any round though, not 100% free of
them.

Safety first with me. ;-)

That's the VMax for you - explosive fragementation. I knew it wouldn't
be good for rabbits.
