Second display is too big for my old monitor

I recently inherited a very old (2006) Dell monitor that claims to have a 1280x1024 resolution from work that I would like to use to extend my display on my laptop. However, after running through every resolution setting that Windows gives me the option for, but they all either extend beyond the screen or are terribly distorted (or both). I have extended onto monitors of similar age before, and I did have to play with the resolution settings, but I was able to get it eventually. Is there another way to make this one work? The settings on the monitor itself allow me to move the display but they don't allow me to resize it as far as I can tell.

The monitor is made by Dell with the model number 1800FP. My computer does recognize the second monitor, which is currently set to 1280 x 1024, although I have tried all of the resolution settings that are offered. For reference, I have attached a picture of what I'm seeing at this setting. As far as I know I'm not using a video converter. The only thing that might qualify is an HDMI-VGA adapter.

Thanks!

That HDMI to VGA is a converter. That monitor does have a 1280 x 1024 resolution, try using the autoconfigure option on the monitor, see if it helps. The other issue is the converter, test the monitor on a VGA connection without an adapter, even on another computer to make sure the display is normal on that.
