Second hard drive - No partition?

Ok so quite a while ago (nearly a year) I got a second hard drive (1TB seagate HDD) as my main one was getting full (500GB seagate HDD).
The new 1TB HDD never showed up with a partition or as unallocated. So I was never able to use it. Now for the past while I have been trying to clear games and rubbish from my small 500GB HDD but it now that I've cleared most of my games and files off of it I really need more space.

My unused 1TB HDD only shows up in some places but not others.

Not here ( http://prntscr.com/5que14 )
It does here though ( http://prntscr.com/5qugpy )

Re-scanning the drive and things like that doesn't work.

I would really appreciate any help that I can get.

(I am running windows 8 if that helps)

Try an elevated command prompt, right click run as admin, and see if it shows up in diskpart.

Type:
diskpart
list disk
select disk n (where n = the 1TB disk if it shows up in the list)
clean

HERE is a site that has all the diskpart syntax.

I would restart then if that works and see if it will show up in disk management where you can initialize and format it.

If not, download the test program from the disk manufacturer as you may need to RMA it if it won't work then.

That first screen shot...right click on the drive in question, you can partition and format it from there. New drives do NOT come partitioned and formatted. Windows has all the tools to do it, built in.

I'm sorry, I have no clue what that means or how to do that.

In the 1st screen shot it is clearly not there... that's the problem.

I just looked at that "Disk Management" screen shot. The drive is NOT showing up there. Something isn't right. You need to get the drive to show up in your BIOS. Then Windows will see it and you can partition it from that screen. I've never seen a drive show up like you have the pics. If it shows in the one, it *should* show in the other.

I'd start with the BIOS. Look and see if you can see both drives there.

What drives are they? What is the connection to the motherboard? What motherboard are you using?

Yeah I didn't look at that shot close enough, I saw two drives (partitions actually) and ran with it.

Under programs, look for the Windows system folder -- the command prompt is in there, open it using a right click and select run as administrator from the options, then type in the commands. Just be sure that the drive you select is the correct one!

Seagate ST500DM002-1BD142 is the one that's working.
Seagate ST1000DM003-1CH162 is the one that's not working/showing up.

They are both connected with working SATA connections. I know this because the SATA connector with the 1TB HDD works fine with my DVD drive.

My motherboard is a MSI Z77A-G43

I'll check my BIOS now but as far as I know they both show up there.

And you are positive you have both the SATA and power cables connected to your drive and it shows in the system BIOS?

Yes and I just checked the BIOS, it shows up there.

@Watky, you were asked whether the drive spins up. Does it?

If not, then it may be configured to Power Up In Standby (PUIS). You can disable PUIS with tools such as hdparm of HDAT2.

A tool such as HD Sentinel may be able to confirm whether PUIS is enabled.

HD Sentinel is saying that it is active.
