Second hard drive

I am trying to add a second hard drive to my mom's computer. Should I leave the first one as the master, and the second to the slave

Yes. If they are older IDE type drives, there will be small jumpers on the back of them to set, There will also be some letters near the jumpers, or a diagram on the disks label.

If they are SATA drives, just plug the new one in. SATA has no jumpers to set.

Also, if it's a new drive and has never been used, you will need to go into disk management and initialize the drive for it to show up in windows.
