Second monitor help

Hey guys, I just built a new pc and I've been trying to get a second monitor to work with it, but everything I've tried hasn't worked. My board doesn't have integrated graphics, so plugging it straight in didn't work. I got a DP to VGA adapter and connected it to my GPU and that still didn't work. I know the monitor itself works as I just used it on another pc. Any ideas on what could be going on with it?

Ryzen 5 2600 3.4GHz CPU
MSI B350 PC Mate board
GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GPU (Primary monitor in HDMI, second monitor using DP to VGA adapter)

should be a connection problem, either the adapter or the VGA cable

Which brand and model is the 1050TI from?
