Hi,

I would like to build a second pc power switch, (so I can turn it on from my desk without bending down (back issues) but without disabling the original power switch on the pc itself and thus being able to leave the original connector in place.

Can I just spilt the cable and hook up a second one, or would i have to push both buttons then to make it work?

thanks.
Tom

It is actually quite easy to do so. There are premade solution like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Desktop-Computer-Supply-Button-Switch/dp/B00HG7HO22
http://www.amazon.com/Desktop-Switch-Ports-button-lights/dp/B00LQAUIKA/ref=pd_sim_147_4?ie=UTF8&dpID=51Bcn%2BrjE7L&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1BBXTSYHBSKM4R9JHC4M

That hook up in place of your normal power switch connector. That way, you can re route the power and reset switches to your desk, and should you ever want to sell the PC or give it to someone else it is only a matter of reconnecting the original connector to get the front power button to work.

Having both working at the same time, however, will require you to get a bit creative, and create a circuit like...
All the power switch does is short out the pins on the motherboard so if you taped into both the power out and return with another switch it would be the same as pushing your power button on the case. Remember when you buy a switch the connection is not made to be continually made up it just cuts the pc on then the connection is no longer made up. If you used something like a toggle switch then you would flip the switch the PC would cut on then you would flip the switch back.

The switch used will have to be a momentary contact push button switch.
