Hi guys,

Voting is now open for round two for the best IF games of 2004 -- it's
time to determine the winners! The top five vote-getters in each
category (or six where there was a tie) were selected in round one, and
are listed at http://www.xyzzynews.com/2004finalists.html.

The deadline for voting is Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at midnight
Eastern Standard Time.

Many congratulations to the finalists, and my sincere thanks to
everyone who helped select the finalists in round one!

Am i wrong or it's the first time that the IFComp winner is not in the
xyzzy finalists?

Wow. I would have put money on Isle of the Cult getting a Best Puzzles
nomination. I guess I'll need to play a few more games to make a more
informed decision in the finals. :)

It's definitely not the first time there has been a disconnect
between IF Comp voting and Xyzzy Awards voting. It points out
the differences between the two systems of tabulation. I don't
think the one should be seen as diminishing the other, and I'm
glad we have both.

Luminous Horizon is nominated for Best NPCs and Best Individual PC.

I agree. What it does show is that games don't necessarily have to be
released for the Comp to do well in the XYZZYs. The non-Comp games
like Future Boy!, the Dreamhold, and Necrotic Drift actually should
have the advantage in the year-end XYZZYs. They benefit in the "Best
Game" area from being longer and more complex, having longer
development & testing cycles, not to mention the possible extra bonus
that an off-cycle release can get when people are hungry for a new
game.

I'm also pleased to see that games like Blue Chairs, All Things
Devours, and Gamlet got as many or more XYZZY nominations than Luminous
Horizon. The Comp basically only ranks in order the player's
preferences amongs the comp games. While Luminous Horizon probably
deserved its "overall" win in that Comp, the XYZZY's are a chance to
fine tune people's thoughts about a variety of aspects in all of the
games.

Either way, good stuff.

I have to admit that I still haven't completed TP. I got hung up on
the names. I know it's sci-fi but funky names always throw me.

On the other hand, I was looking at your code recently and I realized
that there really is a lot going on in the game and that, perhaps, it
is somewhat underrated. If I get some time to complete it sometime
soon, I will post one of my "story-based IF" reviews and see if anyone
wants to argue about it.

Cheer up. Maybe it'll get nominated for "Best of the Decade" in 5 years
or so.

Yep, it's a difference in the scoring system. In the comp, if 1/3 of the
people really like game A but not B and C, 1/3 like game B but not A and C,
1/3 like game C but not A and B, but game D was everybody's second or third
fav, game D has a good shot at winning with the averages. XYZZY forces a
"first place" selection, so it's more likely that A, B, and C end up with
nominations, but D doesn't.

Personally, I was hoping for a "best story" nomination for Trading Punches.
Biased as I am, it's the one category I really felt strongly about. But
alas, 'twas not meant to be. :)

Yeah -- genetics, hybrids -- it has a real purpose to the story, but a
smaller number of examples would have sufficed. :)

If you play version 1.8, it now has a built-in hint system. :) I haven't
received any feedback about it, so I don't know how well it hits the mark
for the spots that players were getting stuck.

Maybe it's just a sleeper. :) Maybe I'll just have to try harder this year.
:)

I nominated Trading Punches for "Best Story" as well. So that's two!

Yeah, I had a secret hope that Endgame would get a nomination for, well,
I can't think of an appropriate category, but I was hoping anyway.

You got at least one nomination for Best Individual Puzzle (beating the
demon). :)

Thanks!

I rather expected that my lack of success would be tied to the fact that
your parenthetical comment was redundant. I had flirted with the idea
that a Best Use of Medium would be my best chance, since you could make
the argument that the medium was .z3 and I did make good use of it. ;-)
