So i have gotten my new build up and running. Everything is fine except windows 10 isn't letting me create a new simple volume for my second SSD so I can use it. When I right click on the drive no options are avalible for me to use. Its a samsung 850 evo 500gb. I have tried to use the magician utility to create a bootable USB for a secure erase but no usb drives I am using are working with the program.

what should I do?

My build:

4gb patriot ram
gigabyte z97x gaming mobo
core i3 4170
120gb ocz trion (working fine at the moment, holds my OS)
500gb samsung 850evo

Solution
Hey there, cat-bomb.

If the option for you to create a "New simple volume..." is greyed out then perhaps the drive has not been initialized. Here's how to do that: How to initialize or write a signature to a secondary hard drive or Solid State drive in Windows. If this was the problem, you should be able to partition and format the drive when you're done.
If not, you should try the SSD with a different computer, or at least a different SATA port and cables on yours, to see if the same thing happens. I'd suggest that you download the drive manufacturer's diagnostics tool to test it and see if there's anything out of the ordinary. You could also check if it has an available firmware update and install it.

Hope that helps. Please...

[strike]I ended up reinstalling windows on my ocz trion and that allowed me to choose the option to create a new simple volume. However when I was trying to quick format the drive it was failing to do so and the drives file system is labled as raw.
On top of that this is a brand new never opened before drive. Yesterday I exchanged the samsung 850 500gb for another one because the first one I thought was faulty because I was getting the same thing.[/strike]

Holy **** it was the sata cables all along. I bought 2 from frys and used those ones instead of the ones that came with the mobo. I switched those with the ones that came with the motherboard and everything is working now. I'm glad this nightmare is over.

Ps: Is that Guts the black swordsman?

That's awesome. Keep that in mind for next time (hopefully you never have to experience this issue again, but just in case). The first thing you need to do is to always try out the problematic drive with a different port (SATA or USB if it's internal or external respectively) and different cables. And one more piece of advice - keep regular backups of your most important files just in case someday the issue turns out to be drive related. In this case the worst that could happen is to RMA the drive or get a new one, but at least you won't lose any irreplaceable data.

And yes, it is Guts from Berserk. I'm a great fan of both the anime and the manga. 😀
