Secondary Router for home network?

I am planning on adding a second router to our home network.

I hope to connect this to our primary router via wifi and use it to connect a NAS and PC to directly

I was wondering what would be the best way to set this up to still access the internet through the router as seen in the diagram here:

You can't use a router to accomplish it the way you have the diagram. What you have depreciated is a repeater and you need a device designed to run that way.

Still using a repeater is not the best idea if you have any other options. If you can run a cable between the 2 devices you can use a router as a AP and it will perform very well.

A repeater will greatly degrade your performance and putting the NAS remote like that is just about the worst place you can put it when you have a repeater.

the reason for trying to set it that way is because most of my devices are upstairs and would benefit from a closer router, however it wouldn't be practical to run cable between the two routers hence hoping to connect through wifi.

The NAS would only be for file backups at regular intervals with no streaming etc.

any alternative suggestions would be appreciated

Use powerline networks to connect them.

Just putting a repeater in upstairs will not magically fix the poor signals. If the end devices get a poor signal and you put a repeater at the same location it too will get a poor signal. It will then attempt to retransmit that damaging the already poor signal. You may get more bars on the signal strength the quality will go down.

To use a repeater effectively it needs to be placed where it can receive a strong signal but still deliver a strong signal to the end devices. In your case it would have to go into the floor/ceiling somehow which is not possible.

that makes sense, i didnt look at it that way.
I looked into powerline adapters but we have a few different circuits in the wiring so im not very confident they would work.
what sort of distance cable would be acceptable before length effects signal quality? would it be feasible to run a cable along the outside of the house and back in upstairs to the secondary router?

Thanks :)

You can go 100 meters with ethernet cable. Cable companies run cable outside the house all the time. Unless you use outdoor cable you must be very careful the cable does not stay wet and is out of the sun. Normal house paint will stop the sun problem and as long as it does sit in water it will last many years.
