I am currently putting together a ~£1500 gaming computer and a friend has just finished his, but is going to be upgrading to an i7 (he does a lot of CPU based physics rendering) around Christmas and has offered to sell me his i5 4670K for around £150 (£180 retail). Does this sound like a good idea and what are the risks.

It hasn't been overvolted but is overclocked to 4Ghz (has been taken to 4.6 at stock voltage); it runs around 60*c and will only be around half a year old so has 2.5 years left in warranty.

I'd take it but be sure to get a proper CPU Cooler, I have the i5 4570k which is essentially no different and even during heavy gaming and stress tests it never goes above 40'C. Depending what case you're getting i can tell you what'll fit.

Stock voltage means nothing, a lot of motherboards over-volt, and auto voltage at 4.6ghz may be damagingly high. Is that 60C on full load maximum load?

If you don't have the stock heat-sink or box that came with the processor you may not be able to get a replacement from Intel if it goes bad.

You can get a new one for 180 pounds.
