I've ordered a new computer for my dad. It's been a while since I've used Windows. What steps do I need to take to help insure security once I get it and start setting things up.

Is an anti-virus program still necessary?

What about malware protection? Or how is virus and malware protection different?

Any Edge browser extensions that should be installed to better keep the system safe? I think he mostly uses the Edge browser.

Or is keeping Windows up to date and being extremely careful with only installing programs from reputable sources a good enough policy?

Solution
Anti-Virus - The included built in Windows Defender is just as good as all the other options.
A once in a while scan with MalwareBytes.

Edge is fine.

Keep the OS up to date, and be sure of your data sources.

The best security system exists between your ears.
