Security certificate of error windows 7

could I have deleted anything accidentally to cause a security certificate error message?

Not likely. There are many reasons that a security certificate error gets generated.

Run Windows Update and see if any updates for the Root Certificates are offered. If so, install them, along with all other available updates.
