security config analysis

My friend gave me his laptop to fix and he has the windows/system32/config/system I know the steps to fix it but I can't set the path ways to true because of security config analysis. it gets the error at startup so I can't go into the file to access it is there a way to access it through recovery manager? because he wants his info on his harddrive

I'm going to propose a work-around to this. Why don't you take the hard-drive out, and hook it up to another machine as secondary drive, and try to navigate to the files inside it and put it on a primary drive, in order to save the info?
Then just whack the drive, and re-install the OS.
