Hi there;

When I start a new game in conquest, I have the option to enter a seed #
in the "Choose your world" set-up screen.

What does that mean ?

Mark.

basically its a starting point for the mathematical calculation of various
random numbers in the game... the theory is that if you have to redo a game
or whatnot, you can get the "same" random numbers again by using that same
number again...

You can get the seed of your last played or current game in the INI file.
This helps if you find a map that you like and want to try your hand at a
different civ.....

I often like the map and the civ I have, but I hate my starting
location. Anything to do about that?

OK;

But does it make a difference when I type a 0 instead of 9 or 7 or 184 ?

Mark.

Yes. Each different number creates a different map. You can repeat
the same "random map" by entering the same number each time.

Only thing I can think to do would be to pick a different civ and you should
start in a different spot...
I'll do some playing around and get back with you.....

Well, without playing the game for several hours there is no way to know if
it truly is the same map... However, each time I put in the same seed 1000
and used the same civ I was put in different start locations. Perhaps the
map is the same and starting spot is still random. OTOH I could have screwed
something up and it wasn't doing the same seed map.... :)
I'm glad I don't like to play the same map over and over... So I've never
needed this feature....

Changing the landmass type will give you different results. I think
different terrain characteristics maintain the landmass shapes. If you're
really into testing it out, just save a standard ruleset with the degug
option on in the editor and you can see the whole map when you play.
