Question Seeking Advice about GPU upgrade from GTX 1080 to RTX 2080 super or 2080TI

Nov 27, 2019
Hello all,

I was planning to upgrade my rig to a MSI RTX 2080 Super or an EVGA RTX 2080 ti black edition and wanted to get your insight.

Currently, my system contains a GTX 1080, i5 8400, 16gb ram at 2400MHz, (3) 1 tb SSDs, 1 550 watt corsair CX PSU, and a GIGABYTE Z370 AORUS Ultra motherboard.

The reason I want to upgrade is because I wanted to see better framerates gaming at 4k on high settings in my games with my new LG B9 oled (using g sync). I also wanted to start getting my feet wet with Ray Tracing and DLSS, also because I can get a decent amount of money at this time if I resell my Zotac GTX 1080 amp edition which works perfectly. Never had any issues, and its still on warranty for another two years.

I realize that I will need to upgrade my power supply for the 2080 or 2080 TI. I was planning on getting a Corsair 750 Watt GQ 750 PSU.

Here are the constraints, the 2080 TI is a bit steep for me in terms of price, but to future proof myself, I am willing to pay for the extra price jump for the EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Black Edition. However, I am concerned about my CPU. I know I will bottle neck slightly with the RTX 2080 super, and substantially with the 2080 TI, according to research i've done, but in the next few months, I am planning to upgrade my CPU as well.

I am wondering whether it worth it to go for the 2080 ti or the 2080 super with an upgraded PSU of 750 while factoring in a 350 dollar price jump from the 2080 super to 2080 ti coming from gtx 1080? I would go for an 850 watt PSU, but not sure if that is needed, also since i am trying to save money where I can. If i could get away the RTX 2080 super and the new 750 psu, that would be ideal price wise, but just not sure if its worth the jump from my gtx 1080 in terms of performance increases.

My other question is, with a bottle necked i5 8400, using either the 2080 ti or the 2080 super, will it hurt my current CPU? Should i be worried about it maxing out my i5 8400 at 100 percent usage? Seems like my gtx 1080 paired with my i5 8400 always 100 percent usage anyways.

Thanks so much.

I am open to your suggestions and insight.
