Question Seeking Advice on Upgrading CPU for Better Gaming Performance

Hello!

I'm currently facing what I suspect is a bottleneck issue with my aging CPU, and I'm eager to upgrade while sticking to a budget-friendly option. My primary goal is to improve gaming performance, particularly in gameslike CSGO, where I'm only achieving 60-90 FPS on my 2k 144Hz monitor witha decent graphics card. I'd greatly appreciate advice on choosing the right secondhand CPU for my setup.

Here are my current PC specifications for reference:

• CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.20GHz (4 cores)
• GPU: GTX 2070 Super
• Motherboard: Gigabyte H170-HD3 (LGA1151)
• RAM: 16GB
• OS: Windows 10

I've been eyeing a secondhand Intel Core i7-6700 3.4GHz, which seems like a potential upgrade. However, before making any decisions, Would this CPU even boost my FPS in CSGO for example?

Additionally, if you have any alternative suggestions or recommendations for other LGA1151 socket CPUs that would offer better performance that would be great.

Can you elaborate on the ram kit you're working with? A link would help two fold.

IMHO, I'd swap the motherboard, processor and ram out for something a little more concurrent, one that can be overclocked. You're playing CS:GO, have you tried using DDU to remove all GPU drivers from your platform and then manually reinstalling with the latest driver sourced from Nvidia's support site, in an elevated command, i.e, Right click installer>Run as Administrator?

You forgot to mention the make and model of your PSU and it's age as well. Temps for your GPU? Make and model of your case?

Ive had the PC since ~2015 - upgraded the GPU and monitors maybe 2 years ago.
It runs perfectly - just the low FPS on games.

No I have not tried using a DDU. I did a clean install of windows last week so I assume this wouldnt be necessary?

• During desktop use:
  • ~40deg celcius
• During CSGO:
  • ~50deg celcius
