Hi All,

I wanted to download windows 10 on my external hard disk so that I could boot my laptop using the file from the portable hard drive and change the location of windows from my HDD to SSD.
In this process my Portable hard disk lost all its data which I wasn't aware of that it could happen.
I have no data left whatsoever.
Can anyone please help me with this problem.
I need to know how to go about this problem with changing the capacity of my portable hard disk back to 1Tb from 30gb to recovering all my data.

Regards

Arun

Solution
Hey there, Arun.

Getting the full capacity of the drive back to normal shouldn't be too hard. However, recovering the data is a whole different story. Changing the partitions and/or the file system often has huge consequences in cases like this one and on top of that you've written some new information on the drive, which has probably overwritten some of the old that that should be there and this could make it unrecoverable.

The most important thing is not to write anything on that drive. You shouldn't repartition or format it as well. Check out the suggested data recovery options from this article and give them a go, to see if you have any luck: https://www.lifewire.com/free-data-recovery-software-tools-2622893.
If that doesn't help...

If that doesn't help, you could try your luck with a professional solution, such as a data recovery company.

Please let me know how everything goes. Good luck!

Thanks a lot for your reply and your solution to my problem. I am using seagate's recovery software as it is a seagate portable hdd. Fingers crossed!
How can I change the 30gb back to the 1Tb original Capacity.
I looked up a couple of YouTube videos but they were of no help.
I managed to do something with cmd and created a primary partition on the hdd. Now it shows 988 odd gigs but my laptop doesn't recognise the device.
What would be your take on this?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Arun

I've left this as a secondary priority until you're able to retrieve your files, but if you want to give it a try, open Disk Management (here's a tutorial on how to open it: How to access Disk Management in Windows) right click on the drive's partition/s and select "delete volume". After that you should be seeing the drive's full capacity with a black border saying Unallocated. From there you can follow this tutorial in order to partition and format it as you see fit: How to partition and format a drive on Windows and macOS.

Again, you should do that only after you've recovered all the files you need from that drive.

By the way, you could post a screenshot of what you see in Disk Management, it might be useful.

Hi Again Boogieman_WD

I have attached the url for the screenshot of the disk management.

hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for your help once again.

Since this is an external drive is it safe to assume that the HDD you are referring to is Disk 2 (931GB with a NTFS formatted partition). If yes, it really looks OK and like the full capacity is shown. Try changing it's drive letter to see if you'd be able to access it: How to change the drive letter assignment in Windows.

On the other hand the 22GB Disk 0 looks a bit odd. Just go with the data recovery process first, hopefully you have luck with it.
