My system (bought Nov 2017):
Dell XPS 8920
Microsoft Windows 10 Pro
Intel Core i7-7700K Processor 4.2 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5
16GB DDR4-2400 RAM
My operating system and programs drive: Toshiba 256 GB M.2 2280 SSD NVMe PCIe (nvme thnsn5256gpuk NV)
Storage drive: Seagate 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0GB/s 3.5" HDD (st2000dm001-1er164)

My storage drive looks to be failing and I'd like to replace the HDD, preferably with a SSD. I am able to do software and hard ware computer repairs, to an extent, but I am lost when it comes to figuring out exactly what to buy.
Currently I can see most of what is on the failing drive but can't do anything with it. It has steadily gone downhill since late last night and it's to a point where now it shows as "unknown" and "not initialized" with a red down arrow in Disk Management. I have a couple backups and I believe I have everything so thankfully that is not an issue.
Since that drive has stopped really working, the computer seems like it has gotten faster. Not sure if that is possible.
So with all the information above, can someone recommend a SSD brand/type for me? I'd like the same size, 2TB, but having not priced a SSD (because not sure what type) I'm not sure if it is feasible. I'd like to spend under $300. Or would you recommend just getting a replacement HDD, if so what brand/type/speed etc?
My computer is used for things like Solidworks, Photoshop, Lightroom, Minecraft, Office, Internet...
Thanks!
