I have an i3-4130 which is forming a bottleneck in my home made gaming PC. I can't afford to just buy a top end CPU presently, but I do have an old i7-920 I could try. Is it worth the hassle or should I get something newer with multi cores, probably only be some sort of i5 though, unless there's an i7 that's cheap.

Solution
You can find compatible i5 cpus for around $50 if you look hard enough. I have the same cpu in a dell prebuilt. If you simply need faster single thread performance, there are faster cpus in the i3 lineup that should be pretty dirt cheap, but not sure how much they would help:

You really need a i7-4790k if you want a serious upgrade:

But the 4790k is in high demand is still quite expensive.

Full specs?

The i7-920 won't work in your current motherboard.

You might be able to find a i5 or i7 1150 socket CPU for a decent price but you may be better off, if possible, grabbing the Ryzen 5 1600 AF, budget B450 board & DDR4 at 3000/3200 MHz.
Thanx WC, the i7 920 is in an Asus sabretooth x58 so it would mean a mobo + cpu switch which is why I said 'hassle'. I think I'm gonna go for an i5 4690 which fits my current mobo and is the max upgrade I can afford at present.

Thanx SamirD, appreciate your link info. You're on point about the i7 4790k. I think I'm gonna go for an i5 4690 which is affordable yet gives me a significant upgrade.
