Semi-Cheap/Efficient Method to Increase my Computer Performance?

I currently have a ~2 year old computer, and am looking to increase performance while gaming but not sure how to go about it. Current specs:

GTX 980 Strix
DDR3 2400MHz (Not sure if running at 2400MHz) 4x4GB
1TB SSD
Maximus VII Mobo (1150 Socket)
i7 4790k
H105i CPU Cooler
EVGA 1000W PSU (80+ Platinum)

For a general idea, I play Rust a lot and have a 144Hz monitor and want to get around 144 FPS with decent settings. Now, don't get me wrong, Rust isn't currently that well optimized but anything helps. Thanks!

Not exactly cheap, sell the 980 and get a 1070, 20% or even 30% increase in FPS

Your specs are already pretty high end across the board. I'm assuming you' ve OCed your CPU? Only thing that would be at all worthwhile to upgrade would be the GPU, and that wouldn't be particularly cheap.
