Hello. I apologise for the amount of text. I've tried to keep the waffling to a minimum, but I'm worried in case I leave something out that's vital.

I should start by saying that my computer is almost 4.5 years old, and that as a result, I've accepted that my problem may well be a hardware issue. I have done some checking and attempted fixing already, albeit most of it was done months ago before the problems started up again. So far I haven't found any faults. I ran memtest for 4 passes with no errors. I checked cpu with an Intel diagnotic tool, ran chkdsk, and have updated whatever drivers I can. I realise that doesn't mean that at least one part isn't failing, it just means I haven't yet been able to find out which one, if any. I should also add that I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to computers, so my attempts have probably missed something obvious.

The BSODs started earlier this year in earnest. I'd had a few before that, but had put it down to the browser I was using, as they weren't showing up during gameplay at that point. They usually occurred at first when starting up firefox. The screen would freeze and the whole system would become unresponsive, and either this would go on for so long that I would simply force a shutdown, or I'd get a bluescreen. It was only maybe a few months after these had started that I began getting bluescreens whilst gaming, specifically whilst playing Elder Scrolls Online. It's worth noting that it was really the only game I was playing at the time, so I have no idea if these would have occurred in other games too.

I looked through some of the earlier minidumps and noticed that a few of them mentioned nvlddmkm, so I DDUed my Nvidia drivers and updated. This seemed to fix the problem enitely, and for two months I was completely bluescreen free. Even Firefox was working well.

The problem started up again about a week ago. Again it occurred at first when starting up Firefox. Thinking it couldn't be the same issue I'd had before, I simply changed over to Edge. But a few days later I had a bluescreen in a game, this time Project Zomboid. This presented the same as the earlier bluescreens in ESO. The only warning I receive that something is wrong is a slowing down in-game, and if I'm listening to a podcast in the background, that begins to jump and skip too. Since then I've updated graphics drivers again (without DDU), but this time it hasn't fixed anything. This morning I experienced something new. I have only ever experienced problems during the initial browser startup, never whilst actually using it, and this is reproducable, but only on Edge. If I head to the main ESO site I can hear my CPU fan rev up and the page slow down. If I exit the website everything goes back to normal, but if I wait long enough I'll get an automatic reboot. I don't get an actual bluescreen with this one, although I do still get a minidump.

This could be entirely unrelated, but the restarting of the bluescreens did seem to coincide with a Windows update (still running Windows 10). I have uninstalled the latest update I could find, but so far it doesn't seem to have had an effect.

These dumps are from both the bluescreen during gaming and after the Edge reboot:

Reboot
Bluescreen

I do still have the dumps from the ESO bluescreens that I can post if needed.

The PC was pre-built. Other than a mouse and keyboard, the only other things plugged into USB sockets are an old set of speakers and an old network adaptor. The specs:

Intel i3-8350K CPU @ 4.00GHz
16GB RAM
GeForce GTX 1050ti
Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB
Seagate ST2000DM006-2DM164

DPC errors seem to be the error of the year.

Cause isn't obvious but it appears to be same thing in both.
Do you use WIFI as I could guess these drivers aren't new -
Mar 28 2013RTL8192su.sysRealtek RTL8192S Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter
or Ethernet cable?
try running this and see if it offers anything newer
https://www.intel.com.au/content/www/au/en/support/intel-driver-support-assistant.html

try updating Nvidia drivers, I have seen them cause DPC errors as well.

Thank you for the reply!

I updated Nvidia drivers this morning, but didn't DDU. Is it worth trying again this time with DDU?

And no ethernet cable unfortunately. The wireless adaptor I'm using is ancient, and I did wonder if that might be the cause? I remember a while ago trying to find updated drivers, but didn't have much luck. If I go through Device Manager I can't update there either.

Also used the Intel Driver Support Asssitant. It said it's all up-to-date.

Given many of the crashes in your description happen on the internet it could be that adapter
ESO, Firefox
I can only see Windows 7 drivers for it. I can find drivers for it from 2010 so its not exactly new.
I have seen newer WIFI cards from 2017 have problems on windows 10, so it would be top of my list of possible causes.

You probably want an adapter marked one of the below:
  • WIFI6
  • AX
  • AC2100
wouldn't be cheap but last probably another 10 years.

I hope it isn't considered rude to reply to what is now an old thread, but I thought I'd let you know that after DDUing GPU driver and finding one that seems more stable, plus finally getting a wifi 6 adaptor, my pc feels a lot smoother and I've had no new bluescreens since. I just wanted to say thank you again for your help!

I thought it best to add to this thread rather than opening a new one.

I am so sorry to bother you again, but unfortunately the bluescreens are back.

Dump

After both replacing my old adaptor and changing drivers I had around 20 wonderful days of just enjoying my pc. Last night a bsod occurred again during gameplay, but this time I can't blame it on network problems as it is a singleplayer that doesn't require a connection. My screen froze, although a podcast I was playing was still audible for a good while. I must have waited a few minutes until it finally crashed.

I'm still at a loss as to what is causing them, but I am noticing a pattern. Whenever I reinstall nvidia drivers I get a period of no bluescreens. This can last for months or days, but everything seems to work flawlessly. Then something seems to trigger them, usually they occur again after I restart my computer, usually to install windows updates.

If I look at Whocrashed it blames intelppm. But I've also read that Whocrashed isn't the most reliable at diagnosing this issue, so I'm not sure whether changing the value of intelppm would help or not? Or whether I should just reinstall nvidia drivers after every restart as a way to stave off the dreaded bluescreens? I would honestly be fine doing that, but I'm not sure if it would damage my card somewhere down the line?

Apologies again for asking for help, as I know this problem is vague and a pain, but any idea as to where to go from here would be much appreciated!

I will keep trying to help as long as there is a problem :)
I am sorry it came back - there are a few people around who might help answer it, apart from me.
I can't guarantee they will look though, I wasn't expecting one of them back so soon.
@johnbl if you have time, can you see what I am missing?

intelppm is part of windows used to talk to the CPU

Well, the new adapters drivers are 6 years newer at least.

i don't think its GPU, it could be something else conflicting.

tried updating VPN drivers?

I have seen this cause errors before
Aug 22 2012AsIO.sysASUS Input Output driver http://www.asus.com/

Thank you very much for your response! That's very kind of you and it's genuinely appreciated!

I shall hunt down the drivers suggested and update them. I shall be out for some of the day, so I shall have to do that this evening. Fingers crossed it might be the key to fixing the problem. If it isn't I shall post any new dumps I receive.

Thanks again.

I've had a good search around for updated drivers for both, and I feel stupid for saying that I seem to be having some trouble. I probably come across as stupid, but to be honest, I'd never even heard of AsIO until today.

I think I may have found something for the VPN driver, but I want to make sure it's the right thing before I download it. There seems to be more than one option however: https://openvpn.net/community-downloads/

As for AsIO.sys that one is a lot harder to find. I can't even tell exactly what it is, and my searches bring up more than one idea. I read that I should be able to see it and update it via Device Manager, but I cannot see it at all. Asus website where drivers can be downloaded is no help as I don't have a clear idea what it is I am asking for. I was wondering whether downloading Asus Live Update and letting that find what I need might be a good idea?

Do you use the VPN? if you don't, just remove it. I don't know which one would be right either.

As for asio.sys... that on me. I should have showed you how
its not something you download by itself, if anything Windows might have installed it.
One way to stop it running with windows is to run this as admin
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/autoruns
go to the drivers tab and it should be there, list might not be in alphabetical order. Click the square next to its name, it will stop it loading with windows.

Thank you for your reply!

Weirdly when I take a look at drivers in autorun, next to AsIO it says under Image Path, "file not found". Also missing is publisher and what I assume is the date it was downloaded. I've turned it off.

I was also able to find the VPN adapter under this list, and turned that off as well. As I don't use it, and I'm positive I didn't download it, if I remove it completely I'm afraid Windows will only go ahead and pick it up again.

Given that my system looks confused over the AsIO driver perhaps that was the issue all along? Fingers crossed, but if I do receive another bluescreen I shall post it.

Thanks again!

cpu 3 has over 600 stacks blocked waiting to be serviced. most likely some process owns a lock and did not release it before it died or stopped responding. the queue of hardware requests just got very long until the watchdog timer went off and called a bugcheck.

you would have to change the memory dump type to kernel and provide the kernel dump in order to find out what process owned the lock.

Thank you for your response!

I've set things up so I should get a kernel dump next time. As much as I dislike bluescreens, I am hopeful that I will finally get to know what is causing them. Just got to be patient now and wait for the inevitable...
