From what I've read, Sempron are'nt as fast as XP's (eg. sempron 2400+ is slower than XP2400+).

If this is the case, what spec Sempron is equivalent to a XP2400+.

And why do AMD muck around with a slower(Sempron) CPU and cease production of the faster and cheaper value XP's.

Sempron 2800+ is slightly faster than AXP 2400+

Sempron 2800+ = 2.0 GHz, 333 MHz FSB, 256k L2 cache
AXP 2400+ = 2.0 GHz, 266 MHz FSB, 256k L2 cache

It's a marketing scam. Take graphics cards as an example:

ATI releases the 9800 Pro. Later, 128-bit RAM versions come into the market. Is ATI worried? No, they got their reviews with 256-bit cards, their product has already earned it's name. Now the slow versions come out, which make their X800's look even faster. Most consumers getting screwed never realize what happened.

nVidia did that for years, first came the TNT2, then the Vanta, then the M64.

AMD learned from this! They have their A64, everything else is just market filler.

It's a marketing scam.

That is one way to look at it. It is certainly misleading. However I believe amd's goal was to compare to the marketing scam of the high MHz lower performance p4 over the p3 and much lower less performance celeron p4. Semperon model # is designed to compare to the p4 celeron D. a64 to prescott or northwood. athon xp was designed to compare to the p4 willy with a performance advantage as they knew p4b would improve things for intel. Athlonxp compared well against the p4b.

If I glanced at a spilt box of tooth picks on the floor, could I tell you how many are in the pile. Not a chance, But then again I don't have to buy my underware at Kmart.

Do you hate VIA as much as Crashman does?

It really has to do with the parts/drivers you're using, some parts are not made "VIA compliant". And why should anyone have to work around VIA's problems, VIA doesn't control the chipset industry! They started out as a cheap substitute for Intel chipsets, and got their power when they went nearly unchallenged for a while in the AMD market. Intel set the standards (x86), companies like AMD found out how to beat Intel at their own game, while VIA doesn't seem to care.

Soundblaster plays the same game. The two are horrible together. They should be stuck together for all eternity.
That combination is responsible for 80% of all the past Amd "instabilities"

Creative makes decent hardware with horrible software. They continuously strive to put any company that produces GOOD hardware out of business, even resorting to legal trickery.

VIA makes poor hardware then tries to fix it with software. As bad as their driver problems have been, their software is probably better than Creatives. It's just harder to fix flawed hardware.

Intel always has minor flaws and does a great job of fixing them, even going so far as to recall parts that they thought made the grade, but found out later in production...didn't. When's the last time VIA has recalled anything? Or even Creative, for that matter!

But what REALLY pisses me off about Creative is their lack of free drivers for any older products. They make you buy the CD. Then there's VIA, who's new drivers often don't work with older hardware, causing system crashes so bad only a reload fixes them.

Thank the computer gods for MS's driver certification program, otherwise we'd still be back in the horror days of 1999-2001!!!
