When so many Federal laws require that All communications that include personal or health information be encrypted how is this going to be enforced? If a company doesn't encrypt the files if gets sued for millions of dollars forcing it out of business. If it does encrypt the files like the other laws require the goverment comes in and closes the doors. This looks like a losing proposition for the companies and their workers. The companies only recourse will be to move the jobs off shore to more enlightened countries.

the last set of rules eliminated liability for the companies for complying. so now you can't sure them for data breaches since the gov is basically requiring them to lower their security. dangle the little carrot to get the companies to go along a little easier.

And this will help a company trying to be PCI compliant? Many of the requirements to compliance require that credit card and personal data be encrypted. And if you send the files off-site they will obviously need to be encrypted which will be in violation of this law.

Wouldn't have stopped the Paris and California shootings because those terrorist transmitted everything unencrypted.

But it's much easier to play these smoke and mirrors games than fire a government employee that failed to do their job.

McCain is a pretty decent guy but he's not much up on current technology. The law should be that if a government agency, such as the FBI, requires that specific encrypted information be decrypted they should get a warrant, the same thing that is done for searches and telephone monitoring. And backdoors are a really bad idea. The create a security hole that make it much easier for hackers. Hasn't McCain ever seen the movie War Games.? I know its a Hollywood movie but the premise that multiple layers of encryption can be passed with a simple password is still valid.

It's no surprise that he does things like this, when you look at his voting record he and Feinstein are very similar it's more proof the left wing and right wing are attached to the same bird. Please John McCain & Dianne Feinstein RETIRE soon it's the best way to server your country.

Good thing we have open source. You know, Linux. The OS that can be released by anyone at any time, and this will never change. You can bet that Linux will continue to support encryption methods. The only way to truly stop encryption is to prevent companies from using it on web servers. Encryption does me know good if everything I connect to uses protocols that do not support it.

I will ALWAYS be able to encrypt my devices. Nothing will ever change that. They can only pass laws that try to scare me into not encrypting anything. The best part about disk encryption though, is that you can make it look like its just an empty disk that was formatted or shredded with some fancy algorithm.

I appreciate McCain's service to our country but he needs to stop this Republican mantra of fear mongering. He has been watching too much FOX News and his brain has been compromised.

To summarize, remove encryption from business because you can enforce it easily and leaving companies more vulnerable than today. Lets just let Chinese gvt hackers right in and build these "back doors" that no one other than the "good guys" will find...ROFL WTF I don't know how he plans on stopping terrorists from working on their own devices and encrypting them... Its takes minutes to install an app and start chatting encrypted or to encrypt your phone. There are so many different levels and types of encryption and he sees it as a scary blanket term that terrorists use to hide from the US. Too bad YOU CANT STOP MATH Mc Cain.

I am guessing Mc Cain needs a rotary dial app on his phone just so he can use it.

considering the man was a navy fighter pilot, and his seat on the Armed Services Committee & Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs
i'm pretty sure his phone has an app that he can program a drone with gps coordinates for your IP address registered with your local internet provider. add some laser detection googles to your tin foil hat there buddy, you're a marked target. YOUR RANDOM DHS MONITORED PHRASE OF THE DAY:
Colombia

What security is threatened? Spell it out please, and provide examples where something was actually prevented by having access to someone's private data. "Our security is threatened" is a rather nebulous thing, more to spread fear than being actually productive.

End to end encryption overall is good for both personal and national security. No backdoors means there is nothing to hack into for either good guys or bad guys. And last time I checked, the bad guys are pretty adept at getting into things.

So the US gets their backdoor, all rosy just for them. Then China demands one, followed by say India. Who and how do you tell someone they can't have a backdoor once the camels nose is under the tent?

Not to mention economic harm to American tech companies trying to sell their products overseas.

i don't know exactly what was prevented, but 2 days (thursday) before the paris attacks happened 20 muslims were arrested in d.c. 3 days (wednesday) before that 4 somalis near the mall of america were arrested, oh and also all those muslims in belgium what was it a week 2 weeks before?......all on terrorist charges for terrorist network chatter picked up via nsa internet spying. they knew something was going down, we just didn't find out what in time to stop paris, however these guys were in america, not paris, so we won't find out until they are convicted for what they planned here in america...that will take 3-7 years judging from past case examples.

i was automatically against this until i put in some serious thought about why somebody would have something to hide and the big tobacco lawsuit from the 1990's popped into mind right away, alot of that was uncovered in intercompany memo's, with out those critical elements uncovered we would have never known that big tobacco companies KNEW their products were causing cancer 5-7 years after required FDA testing trials ended. granted i am sort of still split on this to the point nobody had a gun held to their heads and were forced to smoke every single time...just the facts they knew and put stuff in their products that were addicting and lethal at the same time was all it takes to know end to end encryption would have prevented the truth from ever coming out.

i still want to know everything that was done to require my indentured servitude to keep too big to fail operating, i don't like slaving away for the rest of you any more than i have to, i will be damned if i am forced to keep criminals in business.

Time to write my reps..Its funny that even the roman's 3000 years ago was smart enough to understand that trying to obtain total security and safety means giving up your freedom..I can not count how many great Americans over the past 200 years have spoke to the same extent on this subject that with any country that try's to force and obtain the idea of total security on the masses all freedom and rights is lost and a Dictatorship by the state or a person soon follows..History proves this a fact every time..I am no conspiracy theorist but I have to admit since 9/11 our freedoms and rights as Americans have been under siege so bad that it is to the point I am even wondering if an agenda has been set to remove any power the American people have left..Here is part of the preamble to the bill of rights..It is eerie to read if u understand these rights our for the people to protect us from abuse and Oppression by our Government..It is like another check and balance to keep power out of the hands of the few..Once it gone it is "game over"

"THE Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best ensure the beneficent ends of its institution."

Yeah because McCain barely knows how to turn on a computer let alone that the entire economy relies on good encryption. Retard.
