If I do a format of my HDD and then put Windows 7 back on, will the code I used still be valid?

If you're not changing hardware, then yes it will be valid (if you change the motherboard and used an OEM version of windows, it would not be).

You will have to re-activate your install - if you are out of activations, call the number that it gives you and explain and they'll give you another.
