Okay so i'm trying to help my dad get a newer mouse on his ancient computer. He is currently using a serial ball mouse (9 pin female). I was trying to convert it to a USB but upon research i realized that USB needs to communicate what it is with the computer, so converting USB to Serial Mouse wouldn't work, please do correct me if I'm wrong about that. I have decided the easiest way for him to get a new mouse would be to buy a PCI USB. I know that he is running Windows 98 on the PC... There shouldn't be any problems with the MOBA connecting to the PCI USB should there?

that's a ps/2 to USB adapter. not serial. this would not work

some program that is on the computer. i realize that he must have a ps/2 port or that he can move the program so i think i figured it out but i'm still curious if any one has a solution to this serial to usb convertion

idk man. what is the actual problem we need a solution for? converting a serial to USB mouse?

Yeah because the serial mouse is a female and the convertion to ps/2 makes the ps/2 male and then to convert the ps/2 ro usb makes the usb female... and then there is the question of software issues

Yeah it has a ps/2 port on it but he also discovered that it has a usb port but he couldnt get his usb mouse to connect. i think that is because he doesnt have it connected to the internet. i'm going to go to his house tomorrow and see what is going on because we were just talking over the phone about it. But anyway i really dont think there is a way to convert Serial to USB. i watched a video of a guy converting ps/2 to USB by splicing wires from a ps/2 to a female USB connector then to a USB mouse without software issues.
