The Windows 25-character Product Key (required to perform the
installation) is stored on the CD packaging on a bright orange sticker
that says "Do not lose this number." If it was an OEM (factory
installed) license, it's stored on a label that the PC manufacturer
affixed to the exterior of the PC case, or on the bottom of a laptop.

To recover a lost Product Key:

If your system still runs, you should be able to use Belarc
Advisor from http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html to find the
Product Key. (If you have a factory-installed OEM license, and
haven't since reinstalled the OS, the revealed Product Key is probably
of the drive image used at the factory and not _your_ specific Product
Key; therefore, it probably cannot be -- and definitely should not
be -- used for a re-installation.)

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

If it was an OEM license, you should contact whomever sold you the
OS; although very few manufacturers/vendors keep records of the
Product Keys they've sold, it's worth a try before you have to buy a

Depending on how you bought your copy of Windows 2000, the serial number
will be with the license agreement - either fixed to the front of the 'user
manual' or on the CD case.
Microsoft have to do it this way to try to cut down on theft from software
pirates - those people who will make illegal copies of software and sell it
to other people who are prepared to use it without paying for a proper
license.
If you didn't get a proper license and serial number when you bought your
copy of Widows 2000 then it might be a pirated copy. The best thing you can
do is either contact the vendor or Microsoft. The last thing you'd want to
be doing is handling or using stolen goods, isn' it ?
If you bought a proper licensed copy and registered it, then Microsoft will
have the serial number registered against your name so they should be able
to help you if you have lost the license and serial number. After all, if
you've paid for it then you've got the right to use it - haven't you ?
If your copy of Windows 2000 is currently running on a machine, and you need
your serial number (license key) so that you can do a re-install, then it is
fairly simple to recover the serial number - even though it is stored in an
encrypted form. Best not to explain how in this newsgroup - there's probably
some pirates reading !
