My pc is a DIY and I want all the serial number of my items like the CPU,gpu, ram, hard drive and motherboard. But to get the serial number from my CPU do I have to take of the heat sink fan? And then to put it back in re apply the thermal paste?
When you say serial number, do you mean the model number? If so, you can run something like Piriform's Speccy to find the details about your hardware.
Serial numbers can trace to a single product (for example a laptop) while model numbers just trace to the kind of laptop you want. For example, you want a laptop. Dell Inspirion 1440 is a model number. Then, when you order it, an unique serial number is sent with the laptop. Serial numbers are unique while model numbers can be the same.
There are a number of system information programs for identifying hardware components
Some have a freeware version and a paid for version going down to serial number
Intel cpu have an embedded serial number
whether it can be displayed used to be a bios option to protect privacy
Speccy
Cpu-z
Hwinfo 32/64
SIW
Belarc advisor
Google search gives many options
I looked at a Pentium P4 630 and a Core 2 Duo 6420
I could not find a serial number on the top surface.
there were numbers which looked like a s/n but I Googled them and found they are part of the batch or product code. example L644G463
Looking at freeware System identification programs
most programs give hard drive serial numbers
CPU-Z & SPECCY & HWinfo32 gives RAM Module make, model & serial number
Network device MAC number found by SPECCY
Graphics card possibly a serial number from HWinfo32
ASIC Serial Number: 1242275726371
It is posible a Intel or AMD cpu identification program will find the CPU serial number
(but there may be bios option to allow or block the s/n to be read)
If there are any better programs for this purpose please let us know
