Serial to USB Converter Question

I am trying to install a credit card processing terminal for POS, and am having a bit of trouble. The terminal has a serial output, but my motherboard has no COM ports or serial inputs. I was told to use an adapter for Serial to USB, but it doesn't fit. The male and female parts look like they go together, but the thumbs screws are abnormally long, which prevents the connection from even getting close. Anyone have some insight they wish to share? Thank you

It looks to me as if the female connector on the card terminal still has the jack-screws from the last machine it was connected to attached to its screws. You should be able to unscrew them by holding the hexagonal part with pliers then screw it into the USB converter.

It looks like whoever unplugged that credit card processor from whatever it was last connected to the screw sockets from the port with it. Grab a pair of pliers and try to unscrew everything below the nut.

^^ That's it right there. The thumbscrews got stuck to the posts and took them out when it was removed. No big deal. Pair of pliers and remove them, then it should fit no problem. Happens all the time with VGA plugs.

Added FYI.

When using the usb-serial adapters. The Adapter will create a Comm port in your device manger, you must match your application to that comm port.
Also, I have seen numerous times that some system patches/upgrades cause that comm port number to change on the next reboot so you then have to adjust your application settings.
