Serious Problem After Installing CDRW

I've just installed a new CDRW A-Open 16X10X32X, everytime when I run multiple programs such as listening to MP3 on winamp while viewing pictures or accessing/copying files the computer will hang with a black screen and I've got to reboot the computer. I'm running Windows ME on AMD Duron 800 with 128mb, my current connection is IDE1 with HDD1 as master and CD-Rom as slave with IDE2 CDRW as master.

Before this new connection I share the same IDE2 with CD-Rom and CDRW and the problem of hanging and black screen appears until someone told me to use separate IDE cables but the problem still persist.

In addition I'm runnit on 250W Power Supply.

Could anyone help me with my current situation, your remarks and advice is greatly appreciated.

Running an optical device on the same cable as a hard drive may slow the drive down. No device on an IDE cable can run faster than the slowest device on that cable.

For this reason, it is best to keep the optical devices on the same cable, preferably the secondary.

The problem you are experiencing could be from an over-stressed or potentially failing power supply. Video cards can be particuarly sensitive to this kind of problem ... and the symptoms are usually a blank monitor screen and a hard lock of the system.

Have you enabled DMA for the CD-RW? How about swapping out the cable on the secondary channel?

sorry toejam but i just dont believe that

quote"No device on an IDE cable can run faster than the slowest device on that cable"

i got ata100 60gxp & ata33 16gp on my primary cable, and i get proper ata100 benchmarks out of by 60gxp, same with my ata66 dvd and DMA burner.

that may only be the case if UDMA was disabled or i were using a 40 pin ide cable

Is that a Northwoody in your pocket or are you just eXPited to see me?

Hey, dude!

Rebuttal:

Good catch, buddy. It depends on whether the IDE Controller on the mainboard supports Independent Device Timing. Here's an overview of the issue that will explain why I said that it may slow down the hard drive. Check it out:

http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/confTiming-c.html

I work with a lot of older systems, and as such, I still run into the IDE limitation on a regular basis. So the old rule-of-thumb of never mixing devices on a cable continues to crop up when I'm troubleshooting. Some habits are hard to break!

See ya ...

*looks*
interesting...

i stand corrected.

i suppose it all depends if your working on old or new(ish) equipment

QUOTE:
"The hard disk controllers integrated on modern chipsets all pretty much support independent timing, as do modern add-in controllers, but this was not always the case."

cheers :)
<--- only works with shiney new hardware *grin*
