Hi,

Ive posted a thread earlier. I have build my first gaming PC, but I think it was a bridge too far....beacause I'm afraid I've broken something...

Spcs:

X99 MSI MOBO
MSI GTX980Ti
i75820K
1200w Corsair HX PSU
H100i GTX water cooler

At first my cooling temps were far too high. I accidentally installed the wrong screws for the H100i into my mobo.

I changed them to the right one (which were lower...) and my temps were great! (new MX4 paste

But........ I got 2 times a major FREEZE, just on desktop, couldn't do anything... But I could reset and everything worked.. Until just now....

When I tried to put on the system, I just hear a couple "dead clicks....." The system is TRYING to boot, but it can't....

I've tested the PSU, and it lights up green, so that can't really be it... When I just unscrewed the H100i again, 1 screw was coming up with the cooler...it was 'stuck' with it So i am very afraid there did go something terribly wrong there.... I am VERY afraid the CPU is dead. Of maybe the motherboard..... The motherboard 'on board power switch' DOES light on... don't know if that could mean something.

And one last detail, when the cooler was mounted wrong in the first place, I ran Prime95 and did get INSTANT 95 C degrees... maybe it fried the Cpu? I shut the PC down in 5-10 seconds after starting prime, so it didn't run very long....

Please help :-(

Solution
Yeah that was me.
To me it kinda looks like a solvent liquid dripped on it and was smeared away. Kinda hard to tell from the pictures though.
Might be a refurbished or used one. I have often gotten hardware that has been clearly used before since there was dust on it, fingerprints, scratches, etc.
Regrettably many manufacturers and shops do that. In which country do you live? There might be laws that encourage that and laws that might make it easy for you to get a new one.
It takes a lot to kill a CPU.
Turn off your PSU completely. If it doesnt have a switch, remove it from the power socket. Wait a few minutes, then reconnect and try to turn on the PC again.
If it still fails clear your CMOS (see manual).
Reseat everything. Maybe blow a bit of air on all connectors before putting them on again. Check for bent pins on the CPU socket and look for scorch marks on the CPU underside and on the socket pins.
If all that doesnt help/shows the cause, it will be more difficult to find the cause.

i actually had a problem similar to this when water got under the cpu.

Youre right, since he has a water cooler. It could have leaked.
So check for water first.

Ok, took off the CPU, nothing bend, no water..... looks just as new to me..... How can I upload pics? So you guys can see it.

Is it ok to just test the system for 4 seconds without the watercooler? (Intel doesn't give standard coolers with this CPU's, so I don't have any), I just want to make sure it isn't the H100i with its strange screws that doing anything....

Well, the screws could cause some kind of ground loop if they touch the metal case somehow... But thats kinda unlikely, since that would mean something else is wrong.

While I doubt the CPU will get damaged from a few seconds of running without any cooler, I would first try just disconnecting the power cord of the cooler and start the PC with it still sitting on the CPU.
Also check if you didnt accidentally smear some thermal grease on the mainboard or other vital part of the PC, because a lot of them are conductive.

Hmmm ok. But can you experts see something from the pics? Everything looks fine from my amateur point of view..? So if the CPU isnt fried because of my short prime experiment and doesnt look damaged....maybe then it isnt? And the lights of the mobo (cmos switch and power button) just light on when powering the board....

Have you reseated everything? GPU, ALL cables, the mainboard, etc?
And no, theres nothing obvious on those pics. Im just asking myself what that weird smear is on the name of the mainboard.
I wouldnt be worried about the CPU. They can take quite a beating.

Not a smear. Its plastic over the lettering.
