I have a metal USB of about 16 GB. I frequently plug it in and out of my computer without any problem. But a day ago, when I plugged it in I got an electric shock which was really very high. I have many times recieved shocks from 220 V electricity and this shock was not less severe than them by any means!! But my USB wasn't destroyed and works well. Now when I plug in my USB, I have to handle it in a blanket!! Similarly I have USB speakers. When I connect the USB to a port and accidentaly touch the audio jack it also gives a high voltage electric shock!! But nothing with my hardware has gone bad upto now. Every thing works just well. Except my USB keyboard, which sometime stops responding but that I think it is keyboard's own problem and I am going to replace it. So my questions are:
  • How can the USB ports gave so high voltage?
  • If the voltage is really so high, then why don't my devices like mouse, speakers etc. burn out with such a high voltage while they can only bear voltage of about 5-10 volts?

  • What can I do to solve the problem? Shall I replace my PC(which I don't prefer to do as it is like my best friend!!)?

Is your PC properly grounded? You probably are getting a static shock; it may not be pleasant, but it won't kill you. Since the discharge is to the ground, it doesn't affect components. Anything in the room like waxed floors or carpeting and too low humidity that causes static buildup? You should figure out the cause of the static buildup and fix it or install an anti-static mat (the grounded versions are best).
